{"id":17981,"date":"2011-01-27T13:00:31","date_gmt":"2011-01-27T18:00:31","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/ecolocalizer.com\/?p=17981"},"modified":"2011-01-27T13:00:31","modified_gmt":"2011-01-27T18:00:31","slug":"el-paso-smart-growth-model","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/bikocity.com\/el-paso-smart-growth-model\/","title":{"rendered":"El Paso: Smart Growth Model?"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"http:\/\/ecolocalizer.com\/el-paso-texas\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-17989\" title=\"el paso\" src=\"http:\/\/ecolocalizer.com\/files\/2011\/01\/el-paso.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"500\" height=\"334\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<blockquote><p>If you\u2019re looking for a good example of thoughtful, place-based planning for transit-oriented development (TOD) in a location not yet known for it, you could do a lot worse than\u00a0<em><a href=\"http:\/\/planelpaso.org\/2011\/01\/final-connect-el-paso-report-for-asarco-and-tod-areas-online-now\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Connecting El Paso<\/a><\/em>, a 264-page\u00a0<em>tour de force<\/em> vision for parts of the west Texas border city. \u00a0The plan was\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/planelpaso.org\/2011\/01\/connecting-el-paso-plan-approved-unanimously-by-el-paso-city-council\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">unanimously approved<\/a> earlier this week by the El Paso city council and described\u00a0by council member\u00a0Beto O&#8217;Rourke as likely to &#8220;result in historic change&#8221; for the growing community.<\/p>\n<p>It is certainly impressive.\u00a0\u00a0<em>Connecting El Paso<\/em> emphasizes that TOD is actually not a new idea in the city, which once had a streetcar system supported by walkable neighborhoods along its corridors.\u00a0 Now, with a new\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.nbrti.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">bus rapid transit<\/a> (BRT) system and possibly a new streetcar in the city\u2019s future, there is the opportunity to restore lost urban fabric and concentrate on a human-scaled smart growth strategy<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>That&#8217;s the intro to a lengthy piece looking at El Paso&#8217;s smart growth plans. I wouldn&#8217;t have guessed this Texan city was so progressive, but the plans look great. Of course, smart growth is logical, conservative in essence, and good for the economy, so everyone should be behind it, but you know how things can go&#8230;.<\/p>\n<p>Read the full Natural Resources
