One cost is painful urban congestion, which is made worse by<a href=\"http:\/\/www.infrastructurist.com\/2010\/10\/21\/should-we-raise-the-price-of-street-parking\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">drastically under-priced street parking<\/a>. Another is a relative cost to the environment, which occurs when the near-certain prospect of free (or cheap) parking entices people into their cars and away from alternative forms of transportation. Recently a team of researchers from the University of California at Berkeley, writing in a\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/iopscience.iop.org\/1748-9326\/5\/3\/034001\/fulltext\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">recent issue of\u00a0<em>Environmental Research Letters<\/em><\/a>, described a previously unknown cost \u2014 energy and emissions that come from building America\u2019s vast parking infrastructure.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>This is the beginning of a great piece over on the INFRASTRUCTURIST. I&#8217;ve studied the absurdity of our parking policies in the U.S. on a number of occasions and would say it is one of the most under-acknowledged problems our society faces. Excessive and free parking is a life killer..
