{"id":16958,"date":"2010-12-03T06:58:45","date_gmt":"2010-12-03T11:58:45","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/ecolocalizer.com\/?p=16958"},"modified":"2010-12-03T06:58:45","modified_gmt":"2010-12-03T11:58:45","slug":"bike-theft-and-vandalism-not-an-issue-for-u-s-bike-sharing-programs","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/bikocity.com\/bike-theft-and-vandalism-not-an-issue-for-u-s-bike-sharing-programs\/","title":{"rendered":"Bike Theft and Vandalism Not an Issue For U.S. Bike-Sharing Programs"},"content":{"rendered":"<figure id=\"attachment_17053\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-17053\" style=\"width: 500px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"http:\/\/ecolocalizer.com\/bike-sharing-bicing-barcelona\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-17053\" title=\"bicing bike sharing program in barcelona\" src=\"http:\/\/ecolocalizer.com\/files\/2010\/12\/bicing-bike-sharing-program-in-barcelona.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"500\" height=\"334\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-17053\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Barcelona&#39;s bike-sharing system, Bicing, and U.S. bike-sharing programs, have suffered very little theft or vandalism (so far).<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Unlike the <a href=\"http:\/\/ecolocalizer.com\/2009\/11\/05\/5-paris-france-great-bicycle-city-photo-tour\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>V\u00e9lib bike-sharing program in Paris<\/strong><\/a>, the largest in the world, which has had a bit of a problem with bike theft and vandalism, it seems that this is an issue of little or no concern for <a href=\"http:\/\/ecolocalizer.com\/2010\/08\/23\/new-york-city-bicycle-sharing-program-to-be-big\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>U.S. bike-sharing programs<\/strong><\/a> (and others around the world).<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.streetsblog.org\/2010\/11\/29\/theft-and-vandalism-just-not-a-problem-for-american-bike-sharing\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Noah Kazis of Streetsblog New York City writes<\/a>:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>For example,\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/ecolocalizer.com\/2009\/10\/23\/8-barcelona-spain-great-bicycle-city-photo-tour\/2\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>Barcelona\u2019s Bicing system<\/strong><\/a>, run by ClearChannel, has had about one-fifth the rate of stolen public bikes as V\u00e9lib, despite higher theft rates citywide, according to\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.streetsblog.org\/2009\/04\/22\/bikes-as-transit-new-study-envisions-possibilities-for-nyc\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">the New York Department of City Planning<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Stateside, the problems with crime have been smaller still.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cTheft and vandalism hasn\u2019t been a big problem with either of our two systems,\u201d said Jim Sebastian, who runs Washington D.C.\u2019s bike and pedestrian programs. Under D.C.\u2019s old\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.streetsblog.org\/2008\/08\/14\/bike-share-debuts-in-washington-dc\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">SmartBike system<\/a>, which opened in 2008, only one bike was ever stolen, and that was when a rider left it unsecured. Under the\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.streetsblog.org\/2010\/05\/21\/d-c-rings-in-bike-to-work-day-with-big-bike-sharing-announcement\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">new and larger Capital Bikeshare system<\/a>, which launched in September with about 1,100 bikes, they\u2019ve lost fewer than five bikes, Sebastian said.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Bike-sharing programs in Minneapolis\u00a0and Denver also haven&#8217;t had a problem with these issues. The solution they found?
